What Is Open Adoption?

Indiana Open Adoption Attorneys

How Much Contact Do You Want With the Adoptive Parents?

You are in control of how much contact you will have with the birth parents and the child once he or she is adopted. Some women choose to have frequent contact with the child while others prefer no contact at all. One choice is not better than another — the decision you make should be what is right for you.

At Kirsh & Kirsh, P.C., our Indiana open adoption lawyers have more than 30 years of experience helping birth mothers create an adoption arrangement that works for them. We are happy to meet with you to discuss your options in a free and confidential consultation. Contact us online or call us at 866-469-9200 today.

Open Adoptions vs. Confidential Adoptions

Most adoptions are not fully open or fully closed/confidential. In a completely open adoption, birth mothers and adoptive parents raise the child together through a cooperative parenting agreement. In a completely confidential adoption, the birth mother and adoptive parents never meet. Usually, birth mothers want some information about the child, but do not want frequent contact.

Meeting the Adoptive Parents Before the Adoption

You may want to read about the prospective adoptive parents, contact them by telephone, or meet with them in person to decide if they are right for your child. We can help you learn more about the prospective parents and talk to them on a confidential, first-name basis. We can also set up visits during the pregnancy so you can get to know them and understand their values. Some prospective adoptive parents have even attended prenatal appointments with the prospective birth mother.

Receiving Letters and Photographs

Usually, birth mothers want to receive letters and photographs from adoptive families. All of our adoptive parents are willing to take pictures and write about the child's accomplishments. If you would prefer not to receive these updates, we will keep them on file in our office.
