Reconnecting With Your Birth Mother or Father

Over the years, you have wondered about your birth parents, hoping to reconnect with them someday. You may have tried to search for them on the Internet or adoption registries with no luck. Kirsh & Kirsh, P.C., can help you take the legal steps to make your wish a reality.

Most birth mothers want to reconnect with adoptees and welcome the opportunity. Yet, sometimes it is difficult to find their name and location, especially in fully confidential adoptions. We can make the process easier for you.

Finding the Birth Certificate

The first step to reconnecting an adoptee with a birth mother is to gain access to the birth certificate. Only a confidential intermediary (a neutral third party who is not the birth mother, adoptee or adoptive parents) can gain access to the birth certificate.

We can ask the court to appoint a confidential intermediary through a form called the "Verified Petition for Appointment of Confidential Intermediary and for Release of Identifying Information." We will then send the signed petition to the state registrar, who will have approximately one month to make sure that the birth mother or adoptee didn't already register with the Indiana Adoption Registry. After this step, we will ask the court to appoint Jill Kirsh as your confidential intermediary.

As your confidential intermediary, we can request release of the birth certificate from the Indiana State Department of Health/Indiana Adoption Registry. The birth certificate will have the name of your hospital, doctor and adoption agency. We can contact any one of these places and people to try to find information about your birth mother or adopted child.

Contacting Your Birth Mother or Adopted Child

Before we can tell you any of the information we have gathered, we will need permission from the party being contacted and the judge. We will contact the birth mother or adoptee for you — as long as she or he agrees that the information can be released, the judge will likely issue an order allowing it to be shared.
